Heavy Combination Truck DriVing Lesson

A Heavy Combination truck typically consists of a prime mover (truck) coupled with one trailer with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 9,000 kg.

HC trucks are commonly used for a variety of freight transport applications, including regional and long-haul transport. They are suitable for transporting significant loads over longer distances.

Our Truck Driving Lesson will teach you how to safely operate a Heavy Combination Vehicle under various traffic conditons. Our lessons are suitable for experienced MR/HR truck drivers who want to upgrade truck class.

Lesons are one hour in length and are undertaken in a Border Truck Training Heavy Combination Vehicle.

You must hold an MR (Medium Rigid) or HR (Heavy Rigid) licence for at least 12 months to be eligible for this heavy vehicle licence class

Heavy Combination Licensing Process

  1. Eligibility:

    • You must hold an MR (Medium Rigid) or HR (Heavy Rigid) licence for at least 12 months to be eligible for this heavy vehicle licence class
  2. Minimum Age:

    • Be at least 18 years old.
  3. Training:

    • Undertake training with an accredited Heavy Vehicle Driving School such as Border Truck Training
  4. Knowledge Test:

    • Pass a written knowledge test assessing your understanding of road rules and heavy vehicle-specific regulations.
  5. Practical Driving Test:

    • Pass a practical driving test in a heavy combination vehicle. This test typically includes demonstrating your ability to operate the vehicle safely, follow road rules, and handle various traffic situations.
  6. Medical Examination:

    • Undergo a medical examination conducted by an approved medical practitioner to ensure you are physically fit to drive a heavy combination vehicle.
  7. Application Process:

    • Submit a completed application for a heavy combination truck license to the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
  8. Licensing Fees:

    • Pay the applicable licensing fees.
